Fashion Rider Mission Statement
To be a positive force in the world of fashion by promoting members throughout the industry, providing exciting job opportunities and supporting them with valuable advice to ensure their journey is a long and successful one.
Susie Doenhoff- Director of Fashion Rider
For as long as I can remember I have had a love for all things creative; my journey has enabled me to build my business, and proved to be the greatest education of my life … so far.
It is now 2018 and I am proud to present a new and improved version of Fashion Rider! Together with the assistance of some fantastic people, each an expert in their own field, we’ve worked tirelessly to improve the user experience. Members now have even more control over their profile and users are benefiting from a sophisticated search engine and a ‘Verified Members’ option to more easily find the expert professionals they are looking to work with.
We have also launched our own dedicated Jobs board: Fashion Rider Jobs
The Verified Member status now offers a much easier solution to reward those who are committed to improving their skills and offering excellent customer service.
How did Fashion Rider come about?
Creativity is in my DNA, much of my childhood was spent drawing, creating and building my latest project, usually something to do with another passion of mine, the natural world.
As a teenager I developed a love of design, and prompted still further by my frustration with the lack of choice and uniqueness, I turned my creativity to fashion.
For me, what I could afford in my late teens, early twenties were typically either available to all as on the High Street fashion, or Designer which was too expensive for my pocket. A dilemma made worse as back then the ‘longer length’ was unheard of and there simply wasn’t anything like the choice we have today.
It was while weighing up my choices as to what I should do next I first became aware of how much UK talent seemed to be going to waste. Designers were often disconnected from the resources necessary to set up their own labels and I found I had a burning passion to change this.
Whilst taking time out to travel across South Africa I had the opportunity to experience how their market gave much needed opportunities for young designers to sell their collections; encouraging them and promoting a flourishing and diverse fashion scene. This exposure to a different business model resonated with me as something I wanted to bring home to the UK and expand upon.
Recognizing a huge gap in the UK market for original, unique but essentially affordable fashion my business idea was born. It was originally to be called ‘Fashion Launch’ and would have been a platform for independent designers to showcase and sell their designs.
After my travels, I went on to become a graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University with an honorary BA in Design & Art Direction but it would be a few years yet before I would be confident my skills and experience matched the requirements to see my idea flourish.
I’ve since developed and refined my original concept to include photographers, MUAs, stylists and musicians. I wanted to include all fashion professionals that were needed to create something great and this was the inspiration for the name Fashion Rider.
A ‘Rider’ being a list of things needed to put on a great performance.
Working closely with the Fashion Rider members it became obvious to me that having a great portfolio and exposure wasn’t enough to create long term success. Regardless of talent, many creative professionals are unprepared for the responsibilities of running a business. Fashion Rider now works hard to identify critical business needs and build relationships with those industry expert’s best suited to offer solutions.
Building Fashion Rider has by far been the hardest and most rewarding task I’ve ever undertaken. When you set out to be the leader of your own efforts, establishing yourself and going it alone, there’s rarely anyone to really hold your hand. As a freelancer in any market it is even more challenging. You are responsible for everything, all the shortcomings, but equally all the achievements too.
I know exactly how this feels and want you to know that Fashion Rider is here to support you in any way we can along your journey.
